Recommended Daily Allowance: None but thought to be 2000-6000 mg for adequate intake.

Physiological Effects: Vital for nervous stimulation of the heart.  Acts in sodium-potassium intracellular fluid balance.  Helps maintaining normal pH.  Regulates kidney functions.  Assist in converting glucose to glycogen.  Necessary for adrenal functions.  Assist in oxygen transport to the brain.

Deficiency Disorders: Low blood sugar, irregular heartbeat, respiratory failure, muscle weakness and paralysis, indigestion and flatulence.

Natural Sources: Bananas, lettuce, lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, unsalted nuts, grains, orange juice, sunflower seeds, olives, cheese.

Synergistic Substances: Vitamin B6 and sodium.

Antagonistic Substances: Diuretics, cortisone, dehydration, Digitalis, insulin, penicillin, Amphopen, stress, surgery, excessive hard work, Aldyctazide, Colbenemid, alcohol, Sterazolidin, coffee, laxatives, Diucil, excessive sodium consumption, salt, sugar, Diuril, Aldactone, Orasone, Prednisone.
